After repeatedly calling his phone, a man who found it near a Walmart provided its location. Maestas's father, David Magalogo, and former football teammates went to the area and discovered Maestas's shoes, leading them to search local hospitals. They eventually identified Maestas, who had been admitted as a 'John Doe' nearly 12 hours after the crash. He sustained a collapsed lung, torn spleen, and damaged arteries, and is currently recovering in the ICU.
