France Expands Mobile Phone Ban to High Schools to Enhance Learning Environment
Starting in the 2026-2027 school year, France will extend its mobile phone ban to high school students, a policy previously applied to preschools, primary schools, and junior high schools since 2018. The French government aims to reduce smartphone dependency and social media addiction, improve learning quality, and curb exam cheating. While students can bring phones to school, their use will be restricted. Each school will develop specific regulations, potentially allowing phone use in outdoor areas but not in classrooms or hallways. The Ministry of Education allows exceptions for educational purposes. However, the implementation faces challenges due to the short preparation time, requiring schools to revise internal rules and consult with stakeholders. Teachers' unions express concerns about the policy's feasibility, advocating for guidance on responsible digital device use instead of strict bans.
