Sen. Andy Kim Affected by Pepper Spray During Protest at Immigration Detention Center
Senator Andy Kim was caught in a burst of pepper spray during a protest outside Delaney Hall, a federal immigration detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. The protest, which took place on Monday, was organized to address concerns over the treatment of immigrants held at the facility. Kim, who was attempting to mediate between demonstrators and federal agents, experienced burning eyes and throat after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents deployed pepper spray. The protestors accused the facility of providing inadequate care to detainees, including reports of spoiled food and insufficient medical attention. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, who also participated in the protest, emphasized the need for humane treatment of detainees. Both Kim and Sherrill are advocating for the closure of Delaney Hall, citing the poor conditions observed during their visit.
