Richmond County Deputy and Woman Die in Head-On Collision on Washington Road
A Richmond County deputy, 49-year-old Phillip Wasson, and a 57-year-old woman, Heather Michelle Lanier, both of Augusta, were killed in a head-on collision on Washington Road in Augusta, Georgia, on Wednesday morning. According to Coroner Mark Bowen, Deputy Wasson was driving westbound when Lanier's vehicle crossed the center lane and struck his vehicle. Deputy Wasson was pronounced dead at the scene, while Lanier was transported to Wellstar MCG where she later died. Deputy Wasson had served with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office for 18 years and was assigned to the traffic division. The crash, which occurred near Vineland Road just before 7:30 a.m., involved a U-Haul box truck, a white pickup, and a white sedan, according to witnesses.
