U.S. House Schedules Vote on AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, Co-Led by Representative Gus Bilirakis
The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act during the week of September 14. This legislation, co-led by Representative Gus Bilirakis (R-Fla.) and Representative Frank Pallone (D-N.J.), along with Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.), mandates that all new vehicles sold in the United States, including electric models, must include the ability to receive AM radio broadcasts as standard equipment. The proposal gained significant bipartisan support, with over 370 lawmakers co-sponsoring the measure in both chambers by late July. The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt welcomed the scheduled vote, emphasizing the importance of AM radio as a vital source for emergency information, news, and community programming. The bill addresses concerns that some automakers have begun removing AM receivers from newer vehicles, particularly electric ones, citing electromagnetic interference issues.
