Florida's Burmese Pythons Elude Detection in Lee County
In Florida, the invasive Burmese python population appears to be less reported in Lee County compared to neighboring areas. Experts suggest that the snakes are adept at hiding, making them difficult to spot. Despite low official sighting numbers, specialists believe the pythons are present in Lee County, blending into environments like agricultural lands and urban edges. The snakes, native to Southeast Asia, have caused ecological damage in South Florida by preying on native mammals and spreading parasitic lungworms. Efforts to control the population include the Florida Python Challenge and using radio-tagged male 'scout' snakes to locate and remove reproductive females.
