New Imaging Technique Advances Targeted Cancer Therapy, Potentially Aiding Alzheimer's Research
Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have developed a new imaging technique called Time-of-Flight Cascade Gamma Imaging (TOF-CGI). This innovation aims to improve the imaging of Targeted Alpha Therapy (TAT), an emerging cancer treatment. TAT utilizes alpha-emitting radioisotopes, such as actinium-225, to precisely target and destroy cancer cells while minimizing harm to healthy tissue. Current medical scanners lack the necessary resolution and detection efficiency to accurately image actinium-225. The TOF-CGI technique is designed to bridge this gap, allowing existing scanners to effectively visualize the distribution and activity of these radioisotopes within the body. This advancement is crucial for the widespread adoption of TAT, as it enables clinicians to better diagnose cancer and monitor treatment responses. The research builds upon Berkeley Lab's historical contributions to nuclear medicine and medical imaging, including the development of the scintillation camera and...
