NYPD Reports Record Low Crime Rates Amid Recent Brooklyn Shooting
New York City has reported a significant decrease in crime rates for the first quarter of 2026, according to a press conference held by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. The city recorded the lowest number of murders for this period, with 54 murders and 139 shooting incidents, marking a decrease of over 5% in major crimes across the five boroughs. The Bronx, in particular, saw a more than 9% drop in shooting incidents. This announcement comes in the wake of a tragic incident in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where a 7-month-old girl was killed by a stray bullet. The NYPD is investigating the shooting, which may be linked to gang activity. Commissioner Tisch attributed the decline in crime to a precision policing strategy focused on targeting guns and violent gangs, as well as strategically placing officers in high-need areas.
