Crime and Public Safety Dominate Los Angeles Mayoral Race Amid Decreasing Crime Rates
Despite a significant decrease in crime rates, public safety remains a central issue in the Los Angeles mayoral race. Homicides have reached levels not seen since the 1960s, and gang violence has subsided in many neighborhoods. However, candidates challenging Mayor Karen Bass are focusing on homelessness and public drug use to criticize her public safety record. Spencer Pratt, a former reality TV star, and Nithya Raman, a progressive City Council member, are among the candidates highlighting these issues. Pratt has gained traction by portraying the city as unsafe, while Raman criticizes Bass for allocating too much funding to the LAPD at the expense of other services.
