US Climate Prediction Center Predicts Historic El Niño Event
The US Climate Prediction Center has forecasted a 69% chance of a historic El Niño event during the October-December 2026 season, potentially surpassing the strength of all recorded events since 1950. Declared in June and strengthening in July, El Niño has already caused Pacific surface temperatures to rise by 2°C (3.6°F) above normal in some areas. The event is expected to intensify further, bringing above-normal temperatures to much of the Northern Hemisphere, including western North America and southern Europe, while regions like India, Australia, and Central America may experience drier-than-normal conditions. The Climate Prediction Center also predicts a 100% chance of El Niño persisting through March 2027.
