Chicago Honors Slain Officer John Bartholomew with Funeral Procession
Hundreds of mourners, including police officers, family members, and community members, gathered in Edgewater, Chicago, to honor the life of Officer John Bartholomew. The 10-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department was killed in the line of duty last month while guarding a robbery suspect at Swedish Hospital. The funeral took place at St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church, where streets were closed to accommodate the large turnout. A Chicago Fire Department ladder truck displayed a large American flag, and traditional bagpipes played as part of the ceremony. Officer Bartholomew was remembered as a dedicated officer and a family man. The incident that led to his death involved a suspect, Alphanso Talley, who managed to smuggle a gun into the hospital and opened fire, resulting in Bartholomew's death and the critical injury of another officer.
