Philadelphia Mayor Parker's Tax Proposals Face Opposition as Budget Deadline Nears
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker's proposals to increase taxes on tech companies and rideshare services are encountering significant resistance as the city approaches its budget deadline. The proposed tax increases include a $1-per-ride tax on rideshare services like Uber and Lyft, intended to address a budget shortfall for the School District of Philadelphia. Additionally, Parker's plan to raise taxes on hotels and short-term rentals, such as Airbnb, has been put on hold indefinitely by City Council President Kenyatta Johnson. The mayor's proposals aim to generate revenue for homelessness prevention and other city services. However, opposition from city lawmakers and tourism agencies, as well as a lack of support from state legislators, has stalled these initiatives.
