Maine Community Colleges Receive Federal Grant to Expand Manufacturing Training
The Maine Community College System has been awarded a $5 million federal grant to expand its short-term workforce training programs. This funding is part of a larger $50 million allocation by the U.S. Small Business Administration aimed at enhancing technical education across the country. The grant will enable the expansion of existing courses in areas such as fabrication, precision machining, welding, blueprint reading, quality assurance, marine pipefitting, and manufacturing technologies. These courses, developed by the Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine’s Workforce and the Maine Defense Industry Alliance, are designed to prepare students for employment with small- and mid-sized manufacturers. The initiative will allow an additional 600 students to enroll in these no-cost courses in the upcoming school year, with classes offered at Central Maine Community College, Southern Maine Community College, and York County Community College.
