Calcium Supplement Guidelines Emphasize Dosage and Risks for U.S. Adults
New guidelines and research highlight the critical importance of understanding proper calcium supplement dosage and potential risks for U.S. adults, particularly postmenopausal women. While adequate calcium intake is essential for lifelong skeletal health and preventing osteoporosis, exceeding recommended amounts can lead to significant health implications. The recommended daily intake for most adults is 1,000 mg, increasing to 1,200 mg for women over 50 and men over 70. However, the upper limit is 2,500 mg per day for adults up to age 50 and 2,000 mg for those over 50. Research indicates that calcium supplementation can help prevent bone loss in postmenopausal women, especially when combined with vitamin D. However, concerns exist regarding potential links between calcium supplements and increased risks of heart disease, prostate cancer, and kidney stones, particularly when intake is excessive.
