National Human Rights Commission Strengthens Right to Information Ahead of 2027 Elections
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Nigeria, through its Human Rights Institute, has conducted a one-day training program for its staff on the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, 2011. The training, held at the Commission's headquarters, aimed to enhance knowledge on access to information, civic participation, and democratic accountability. This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen the right to information as a fundamental human right and a tool for accountability, particularly in anticipation of the 2027 General Elections. The NHRC acknowledges that despite the FOI Act being in place for over a decade, challenges such as poor compliance, weak record management, lack of proactive disclosure, and inadequate responses to information requests continue to hinder citizens' right to know. The capacity-building program is designed to address these deficiencies and bolster the institutional capacity to promote transparency, participation, and accountability.
