USGS Reclassifies Atlanta Tremor as Quarry Blast, Not Earthquake
A reported 2.3 magnitude earthquake near Lilburn, Georgia, initially thought to be a natural seismic event, has been reclassified by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) as a manmade quarry blast. The tremor occurred on Wednesday afternoon and was felt locally, with reports of vibrations similar to those caused by a large truck passing. The USGS identified the center of the blast near Meadowcreek High School, close to Gwinnett County Fire Station 23, an area with at least three active quarries. The specific quarry responsible for the blast remains unidentified, and it is unclear if any damage occurred to nearby properties.
