University of Maine System to Award College Credit for High School Microcredentials
The University of Maine System is set to award academic credit to high school students for microcredentials earned through Jobs for Maine’s Graduates (JMG), a statewide nonprofit. This initiative, starting this fall, allows students to gain up to eight college credits for demonstrating mastery in skills such as financial and digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and leadership development. The program specifically targets students who may not traditionally view college as an option, with JMG serving over 13,000 students annually, many of whom come from economically disadvantaged households and are first-generation college prospects. The agreement marks the first time faculty governance groups within Maine’s public universities have agreed to accept microcredentials for college credit, evaluating them through a process similar to that used for prior learning, including work and military experience.
