Gonzales had already ended his reelection campaign under pressure from GOP leadership. Text messages revealed inappropriate exchanges between Gonzales and Santos-Aviles, leading to bipartisan calls for his resignation. The affair and subsequent events have drawn significant attention, especially as similar allegations have been made against Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell, who also announced his resignation. The House was preparing to vote on the expulsion of both congressmen.
