Cruise Ship MV Fiji Princess Runs Aground on Famous Movie Island, Passengers Safely Evacuated
The MV Fiji Princess, a cruise ship operating in the waters around Fiji, ran aground on a reef near Monuriki Island, the filming location for the 2000 movie 'Cast Away.' The incident occurred after the ship encountered a severe squall while anchored, causing it to drag anchor and become grounded. The ship, which has a capacity of 64 passengers and 31 crew members, was carrying 30 passengers and 17 crew at the time. All individuals on board were safely evacuated without injuries. The ship sustained significant damage to its port side, and there was an ingress of water near the steering equipment. Authorities are focused on preventing environmental damage, particularly from the 20,000 liters of diesel fuel on board. A salvage team from Australia has been deployed to assess the situation and plan the vessel's removal.
