HHS to Decertify Cincinnati-Based Organ Donation Non-Profit Over Safety Concerns
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced its decision to decertify Network for Hope, a nonprofit organ procurement organization with an office in Cincinnati, due to significant patient and donor safety concerns. The organization serves approximately 7 million people across Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia. An investigation by HHS revealed over 100 cases of concern, including instances where patients exhibited neurological signs incompatible with organ donation. Some potential donors were reportedly not deceased at the time organ procurement was initiated. Network for Hope's CEO, Barry Massa, has expressed strong disagreement with the decision and plans to appeal, asserting that the organization complies with federal policies and has implemented a 'pause in procedure' process.
