Record-Breaking El Niño May Bring Winter Tornadoes to Florida
A potentially record-breaking El Niño is expected to bring significant weather impacts to Florida this winter, including an increased risk of severe storms and tornadoes. Meteorologists predict that the 2026-2027 El Niño could be the strongest on record, with sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean forecasted to reach 2.7°C (4.8°F) above average. This climate pattern is likely to result in frequent heavy rainfall, cooler temperatures, and an elevated risk of supercell thunderstorms capable of producing long-track tornadoes. The last strong El Niño in 1998 caused devastating tornadoes in Florida, killing 42 people and injuring 250.
