New Research Explores Ketogenic Diet's Protective Effects on Aging Brains
Recent research has expanded the understanding of how dietary interventions, specifically ketogenic diets, may impact neurological health. A review published in Translational Neurodegeneration examines the potential role of ketone bodies as an alternative energy source for brain cells when glucose utilization is impaired, a common issue in neurodegenerative conditions. The brain typically relies on glucose for energy, but a high-fat, very low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet shifts the body's metabolism to use fat, producing ketone bodies like acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone.
