High Diesel Prices Strain Colorado Agricultural Sector Amidst Harvest Season
Colorado's agricultural sector is facing significant pressure due to soaring diesel prices, which have reached over $6.40 per gallon. This increase is impacting farmers during the critical silage harvest season, where heavy machinery like choppers, trucks, and pack tractors are heavily reliant on diesel fuel. According to Jed Sidwell at Ag Bull Media, an average combine will incur an additional $7,500 in fuel costs compared to the previous year. For larger silage operations involving multiple choppers and numerous trucks, the additional fuel expenditure can quickly escalate to $500,000. This financial strain is compounded by a challenging moisture year, leading to lower crop yields, meaning producers are spending more to harvest less. The issue extends beyond agriculture, affecting the entire U.S. trucking industry, which is crucial for transporting agricultural products from farms to grocery stores.
