University of Louisville's Cards SPEAK Secures Funding to Advance Suicide Prevention Efforts
The University of Louisville's 'Cards SPEAK' initiative has received additional funding to continue its suicide prevention and mental health education activities for another four years. This initiative, which stands for suicide prevention, education, awareness, and knowledge, aims to strengthen the university's ability to provide a coordinated, evidence-based approach to suicide prevention. According to Tara Korfhage, associate director of the Center for Family and Community Well-Being and project manager for Cards SPEAK, nearly 2,000 faculty, staff, and students completed QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer) training during the previous grant period, with around 500 participating in other mental health programs. Undergraduate Sarah Thompson noted that Cards SPEAK helps students recognize when someone needs support and connects them with resources, making them more comfortable responding during a mental health crisis.
