FDA Issues Recall for Hand Soaps Due to Potential Bacterial Contamination
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for over 40 hand soap products across multiple states due to potential contamination with harmful bacteria. The recalled products, sold under brand names such as Assured, Blumen, DermaRite, KleenFoam, and SofCare, may contain bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas putida, Pseudomonas monteilii, Serratia marcescens, and Serratia nematodiphila. These bacteria can cause infections, such as pneumonia and urinary tract infections, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems. The contamination risk arises if the bacteria enter the body through cuts, scrapes, or cracks in the skin. The recall has been classified as a Class II recall, indicating that the use of the product could lead to temporary or medically reversible health problems, or that the risk of serious health consequences is remote.
