Gut Microbiome Changes May Precede Alzheimer's Symptoms, Study Suggests
A narrative review published in the journal Nutrients explores the potential link between gut microbiota, diet, and early Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. The review highlights that metabolic alterations and amyloid accumulation in the brain may be accompanied by changes in gut microbiota composition. These changes include disruptions in fermentation pathways and decreases in short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) biosynthesis. The review suggests that diet-induced microbiota changes could influence gut-brain communication, potentially impacting early AD pathology. However, the current evidence is limited, with most studies focusing on populations with AD or mild cognitive impairment rather than preclinical AD.
