Georgia State University to Offer State's First Doctor of Social Work Degree
Georgia State University has received unanimous approval from the University System of Georgia Board of Regents to offer the state's first Doctor of Social Work (DSW) degree. The program, housed within the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies’ School of Social Work, is slated to commence in 2027. This hybrid program will combine in-person and online learning modalities, targeting experienced professionals seeking advanced leadership and teaching roles within human service organizations. The curriculum will focus on executive leadership, organizational change, and applied research, requiring students to connect coursework to real-world professional challenges and complete an applied capstone project designed to create measurable organizational, community, or policy impact. This initiative addresses a recognized gap, as no other institution in Georgia currently offers a practice doctorate in social work, compelling professionals to seek such credentials out-of-state.
