Pvt. Roosevelt Batts, a U.S. serviceman, was recovering in the South Pacific as of May 19, 1945, according to the Wilson Daily Times. His family history in Black Creek township, Wilson County, North Carolina, has been documented through census records. In the 1930 census, Roosevelt, then 7, was living with his parents, farmer Amos Batts and Elizabeth Batts, and siblings Arlettie, 10, James, 8, and Amos Lee, 5. By the 1940 census, his mother Elizabeth, 42, was a widow and farmer, living with sons James H., 19, Roosevelt, 16, and Leander, 12. Another son, Amos Leander Batts, later died while in service. Roosevelt Batts registered for the draft in 1940. Post-war, the 1950 census shows Roosevelt Batts, 25, and his wife Hattie Margaret, 25, a secretary, as roomers at 331 Quincy Street in New York, New York County, New York. Roosevelt Batts passed away on September 17, 1986, and was interred at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, New York.
