Study Links Increased Fever Burden in ICU Stroke Patients to Higher Mortality Rates
A retrospective cohort study, utilizing data from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) database, has found a significant association between a greater fever burden in the first 72 hours after ICU admission for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and increased 28-day all-cause mortality. The study, published in Frontiers in Neurology, analyzed 3,016 adult patients with AIS admitted to the ICU. Patients were categorized into no, low, and high fever-burden groups based on the area under the temperature-time curve above 37.9 °C. The 28-day mortality rates were 15.3% for the no fever-burden group, 28.7% for the low fever-burden group, and 36.6% for the high fever-burden group. After adjusting for various factors, both low and high fever burdens were independently associated with higher mortality, with adjusted hazard ratios of 1.404 and 1.948, respectively, compared to patients with no fever burden.
