MoMA PS1 Eliminates Admission Fee, Expanding Access to Art for All Visitors
MoMA PS1, a contemporary art satellite of New York's Museum of Modern Art, has announced that it will eliminate its admission fee for all visitors starting January 1, 2026. Previously, the museum offered free admission only to New York City residents, while other visitors faced a suggested fee of $10. This change is made possible by a $900,000 donation from entrepreneur Sonya Yu, who emphasized the transformative power of art access. MoMA PS1 will become New York's largest free art museum, joining others like the Bronx Museum of the Arts. This move contrasts with recent admission fee increases at other major New York museums, such as the Guggenheim and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which have raised their fees to combat inflation and low attendance. The decision aligns with findings from a report by the Crystal Bridges Museum of Art, which suggests that free admission can increase attendance and reduce costs per visitor.
