Rediscovered Fossil Sheds Light on Dinosaur Ancestry
A fossil of a new reptile species, Silescelida acristata, discovered in Brazil, has provided new insights into the evolution of archosauriforms, the group that led to dinosaurs and crocodiles. The fossil, found in the UNESCO Quarta Colônia Geopark, dates back to the Middle Triassic Period, around 240 million years ago. This discovery fills a gap in understanding the evolutionary history of these reptiles, highlighting the diversification of archosauriforms during the Triassic. The fossil's rediscovery after being lost for 20 years underscores its significance in paleontological research.
