Grand Rapids Warehouse Serves as Critical Hub for Wildfire Response in Midwest and Northeast U.S.
A warehouse in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, known as the Northeast Interagency Fire Cache, plays a crucial role in supplying equipment to wildfire crews across the Midwest and northeastern United States. Operated jointly by the U.S. Forest Service and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, this facility stocks essential gear such as chainsaws, hoses, pumps, sprinkler kits, and fire-resistant clothing. Following a busy summer battling wildfires, including those in the Superior National Forest, the warehouse is now engaged in inspecting, cleaning, and repairing returned equipment. The cache sent over $7.7 million in supplies to fires in and around the Superior National Forest this summer, including 104 miles of 1 ½-inch hose and 62,064 AA batteries. The facility also houses the National Symbols Cache, distributing educational materials featuring Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl, and the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center, which coordinates wildfire responses.
