Italian Authorities Discover Ancient Roman Shipwreck Off Sicilian Coast
An ancient Roman shipwreck has been discovered off the coast of Mazara del Vallo in Sicily, Italy. The ship, believed to date back to between the 2nd and 1st century BCE, was found approximately three nautical miles from the shore at a depth of 46 meters. The wreck contains numerous well-preserved amphorae, which are expected to provide valuable insights into the ship's history, its cargo, and the trade routes of the Mediterranean region. The discovery was not the result of a planned archaeological expedition but was reported by local citizens who noticed the artifacts while diving. Following the report, a coordinated effort involving the Carabinieri's Cultural Heritage Protection Unit, the Marine Heritage Protection Office of the Sicily Region, and other local authorities confirmed the presence of the wreck and secured the site.
