ICE's Plan to Reopen Detention Facility in North Carolina Faces Backlash
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is set to reopen the Rivers Correctional Institution in Winton, North Carolina, as a major immigration detention center. The facility, which will house 1,400 beds, is part of an agreement with GEO Group, a private prison operator. The reopening has sparked anger and pushback from local communities and advocacy groups. Governor Josh Stein has condemned the move, emphasizing that the facility is not state-owned and he had no role in its reopening. He criticized ICE for its track record of detaining and abusing American citizens and highlighted the deaths that have occurred in ICE custody.
