Report Warns of Profound Ocean Changes Due to Climate Emergency, Urges Political Action
A new report, the 10th annual Copernicus Ocean State Report, compiled by over 100 international scientists, delivers a stark warning about the profound changes occurring in the world's oceans due to the climate crisis. The report, based on four decades of data, indicates that the ocean is warming at an alarming rate, with significant consequences for marine life, coastlines, and global communities. Key findings include a global mean sea level rise of 3.8 ± 0.3 millimeters annually between 1999 and 2025, and a 17% increase in ocean acidity over the last four decades, severely impacting crucial underwater ecosystems. Record-breaking marine heatwaves were observed in 2024, alongside an unprecedented low sea level event in the Bothnian Bay. Peter Thomson, the UN secretary-general's special envoy for the ocean, emphasized that the evidence is clear, and political will is now needed to address these issues.
