Senator Van Hollen Criticizes ICE Detention of Johns Hopkins Researcher
Senator Chris Van Hollen has publicly criticized the detention of Fatima Ameaka, a researcher at Johns Hopkins University, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Ameaka, who entered the U.S. legally on a Fulbright scholarship to pursue a Master's in Public Health, was detained at an airport while boarding a domestic flight. The Department of Homeland Security claims she overstayed her visa, a claim her attorney disputes, citing her valid immigration documents. Ameaka was held in ICE facilities across Virginia, Louisiana, and Texas before being released. Her case has sparked debate over the Trump administration's immigration policies, particularly the use of domestic flights to enforce deportations.
