Oregon Battles Nation's Four Largest Active Wildfires Amid Dry Conditions
Oregon is currently facing the nation's four largest active wildfires, with the fifth-largest burning in Washington, as reported by the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center (NWCC) on July 29, 2026. Approximately 1.7 million acres have burned in Oregon this year, with 1,329 fires reported to date. The state has mobilized 39 firefighting teams, including 12 out-of-state teams from California and Washington, to combat the blazes. The region remains under significant fire weather concerns due to dry, breezy conditions and low humidity, particularly in southeast Oregon. A dry cold front expected on Saturday could exacerbate fire risks with strong, gusty winds. The NWCC also noted that overnight humidity recovery east of the Cascades will remain limited, further fueling fire activity. Nationwide, over 4.5 million acres have burned this year, surpassing the 10-year average for both fires and acreage.
