Law Professors Urge ABA to Retain Diversity Rule Amid Potential Repeal
The American Bar Association (ABA) is facing pressure from hundreds of law professors, deans, students, lawyers, and bar associations to maintain its diversity and inclusion requirement for law schools. This requirement, which has been a longstanding part of the ABA's accreditation standards, is under scrutiny as the organization considers its potential repeal. The debate has intensified in the context of the Trump administration's broader campaign against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. During a recent 30-day public comment period, the ABA received 47 comments advocating for the retention or strengthening of the diversity standard, while only two comments supported its repeal. Critics argue that eliminating the rule would be seen as yielding to right-wing pressures that oppose civil rights and the rule of law.
