Rep. David Scott Passes Away at 80, Marking Fifth Congressional Death Since 2025
Rep. David Scott, a Democratic congressman from Georgia, has died at the age of 80. His passing marks the fifth death of a member of the 119th Congress since it convened in January 2025. Scott, who was seeking re-election for a 13th term, had been a significant figure in the House, notably serving as the first African American chair of the House Agriculture Committee. Despite facing criticism over his age and health, Scott remained a committed representative of Georgia's 13th Congressional District, a majority-black area covering parts of Atlanta's southeastern suburbs. His death leaves the House with 430 members, with five vacancies, two of which are set to be filled in special elections in June.
