Lewiston City Administrator Reports Positive Start for Youth Gun Violence Initiative

Lewiston City Administrator Bryan Kaenrath has announced that the Community Engagement and Accountability (CEA) initiative, designed to combat youth gun violence, is off to a promising start. Launched in August, the program integrates community policing efforts with proposed legislative changes. Since January, Lewiston has recorded 35 gun violence incidents, with 22 involving children, leading to 24 juvenile arrests and the seizure of 67 firearms. The city allocated $200,000 in overtime for its understaffed police department, enabling officers to conduct foot and bike patrols, resulting in over 900 community contacts. Kaenrath emphasizes the importance of these interactions in fostering positive relationships between residents and law enforcement. While it's too early to definitively assess the impact on gun violence, the community policing aspect aims to build trust and gather neighborhood insights. The initiative also seeks to influence state legislative changes to the juvenile justice system, focusing o...

Canton House Fire Injures Occupant and Firefighter, Destroys Home

Fire Chief Jamie Meier reported that heavy flames were seen rising from an enclosed porch to the attic and roof upon arrival. Firefighters initially attempted to combat the blaze from inside but were forced to evacuate when the roof began to collapse. The sole occupant of the home was found injured outside, sustaining non-life-threatening burn injuries and was transported to a Boston hospital. A pet labradoodle died in the fire. The property was completely destroyed, and officials believe the fire was accidental, likely originating from embers in a portable fire pit used on the back porch. The fire reignited around 3 a.m. the following day while the owner was boarding up the building, spreading to a nearby camper vehicle with propane tanks and melting a neighbor's vinyl siding. A firefighter was also hospitalized for exhaustion.

Lenka Gräsleová, head of crisis management and civil protection for Olomouc, highlighted differences such as Czech crews using less water and a single-rope system for rescues, compared to Owensboro's two-rope system, and not pairing firefighters with police on active shooter calls, unlike in the U.S.
