Jim Bakker's PTL Network Oversold Lifetime Memberships, Leading to Fraud Conviction
Jim Bakker, founder of the PTL (Praise The Lord) Network, and his wife Tammy Faye, were involved in a significant faith-based fraud scandal in the 20th century. The PTL Network, which included the Heritage USA theme park, raised funds by selling 'lifetime memberships' for a $1,000 fee, promising a three-night annual stay at the resort's hotels. Bakker had stated that only 25,000 lifetime partnerships would be sold for The Grand hotel and 30,000 for The Towers hotel. However, court documents revealed that 66,683 partnerships were sold for The Grand and 68,755 for The Towers, significantly overselling the promised capacity.
