North Carolina Election Board Implements Stricter Mail Voting Rules Amid Controversy
The North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE), now under Republican control, has approved new rules that complicate the process of voting by mail. The decision, made in a 3-2 vote along party lines, requires voters to submit written attestations to correct technical envelope irregularities with their mail ballots. Previously, such ballots were counted without additional action from voters. Democrats on the board argue that these changes create unnecessary hurdles and could disenfranchise voters, particularly those with disabilities. The board also recently lowered the threshold for rejecting forms submitted by voters without photo ID, a move criticized by Democrats as potentially leading to more ballots being discarded.
