New York City Launches Free Child Care Pilot for Municipal Workers
New York City has announced the opening of applications for 'The Little Apple,' a pilot program offering free, full-day, full-year child care for municipal workers. The initiative, led by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Department of Citywide Administrative Services Commissioner Yume Kitasei, aims to serve approximately 40 children aged 6 weeks to 3 years. The child care center will be located in the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building in Lower Manhattan, which is undergoing a $10 million renovation to accommodate the facility. The program is designed to improve employee retention and productivity by providing accessible child care, potentially saving families up to $20,000 annually. Applications are open until May 15, 2026, with selections made through a random process.
