Bulker Evades Attempted Boarding by Armed Skiff Near Yemen
A bulker sailing south of Yemen successfully evaded an attempted boarding by an unidentified skiff on May 1. The incident occurred approximately 92 nautical miles south of Al Mukalla, Yemen, in the Gulf of Aden. The skiff, carrying seven heavily armed individuals, approached the bulker aggressively, coming within 10 meters of the vessel. The crew, supported by armed security guards, executed defensive maneuvers, including increasing speed, which led to the skiff aborting its approach. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) credited the crew's readiness and defensive actions for preventing the boarding. This incident is part of a series of increased pirate activities in the region, with EUNAVFOR Operation Atalanta issuing multiple warnings about such threats.
