National Weather Service Issues Extreme Heat Warnings Across 22 States, Urges Residents to Stay Indoors
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued extreme heat advisories across 22 states, warning that heat index values could reach as high as 112 degrees in parts of the South and Gulf Coast. The advisories, which are in effect from Alaska to the Carolinas, cover regions including the Plains, Midwest, South, Mountain West, and Southeast. The NWS advises residents to stay indoors, out of the sun, and to remain hydrated. The heat advisories are expected to last through Sunday evening in some areas and until Monday night in others. The affected states include Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. The NWS has emphasized the dangers of extreme heat, which can overwhelm the body's ability to cool itself, leading to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
