AI Data Centers Face Significant Energy and Water Consumption Challenges
The proliferation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is leading to a substantial increase in the energy and water consumption of data centers. While the carbon footprint of AI has garnered public attention, its water usage remains less discussed. Data centers, which house the powerful computers processing AI requests, operate 24/7 and require immense amounts of electricity for both operation and cooling. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that data centers accounted for approximately 1.5% of global electricity consumption in 2024, a figure projected to more than double by 2030 due to AI's continued spread. A typical AI-focused data center consumes as much electricity as 100,000 households, with larger facilities under construction expected to consume 20 times more. Furthermore, server cooling necessitates large quantities of water. A study by the University of California, Riverside, and the University of Texas at Arlington suggests that a single chatbot conversation can indirectly require about h...
