Review Highlights Probiotic Potential for Mental Health, Identifies Research Gaps
A recent narrative review published in the Journal of Restorative Medicine synthesized clinical and translational evidence on probiotic interventions for mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. The review explored proposed gut-brain mechanisms, such as neurotransmitter modulation, immune regulation, inflammation reduction, short-chain fatty acid production, and improved gut barrier function. Specific probiotic species, particularly Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, have been linked to improvements in various clinical outcomes. For instance, Lactobacillus plantarum DR7 and P-8 were associated with lower cortisol and inflammatory markers and psychological improvements in depression, while Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12 showed improvements in anxiety. However, the review also noted considerable differences between studies in terms of strains, doses, populations, durations, and outcome measures, which limit the clinical applicability and iden...
