Alpha-Synuclein Impairs Protein Translocation in Early Parkinson’s Disease
Research has shown that alpha-synuclein, a protein associated with Parkinson's disease, blocks co-translational protein translocation in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) during the early stages of the disease. The study utilized human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived dopaminergic neurons to model Parkinson's pathology. It was found that alpha-synuclein aggregation disrupts normal protein processing in the ER, contributing to cellular dysfunction. This discovery provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying Parkinson's disease progression.
