ICTP Awards 2026 Dirac Medal to Four Physicists for Contributions to Statistical Mechanics
The International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) has announced the recipients of the 2026 Dirac Medal, awarded to four physicists for their significant contributions to statistical mechanics. The winners are Bernard Derrida, Deepak Dhar, Marc Mézard, and Haim Sompolinsky. Their work has extended the concepts of equilibrium statistical mechanics into non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, optimization problems, theoretical neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. The medal recognizes their pioneering efforts in using statistical mechanics to address complex systems in various fields, including biology, computer science, and AI. ICTP Director Atish Dabholkar highlighted the importance of their work in expanding the traditional boundaries of statistical mechanics.
