Maryland's School Funding Priorities Highlight Administrative Spending Over Classroom Supplies
Maryland's education funding has come under scrutiny due to the disproportionate allocation of resources towards administrative costs compared to classroom supplies. According to recent data, the state spends significantly more per pupil on administration and mid-level administration than on textbooks and instructional supplies. Specifically, Maryland allocates $1,587.53 per pupil for administrative functions, while only $436.78 is spent on instructional materials. This spending pattern has remained consistent over the years, raising concerns about the prioritization of funds. The Blueprint for Maryland's Future, a legislative initiative aimed at improving education, directs funds towards career ladders and certification bonuses for teachers, rather than directly addressing classroom supply needs. Despite Maryland's high per-pupil spending, teachers often find themselves paying out of pocket for classroom supplies, with many working second jobs to cover these expenses.
